AVRDI
Association de la Vallée du Richelieu pour la Déficience Intellectuelle
AVRDI serves people with intellectual disabilities in and around Beloeil, Quebec. It offers an excellent program of social and recreational activities where young people can come together to meet their friends and make new friends.
Reaching Out and Creating Reciprocity
Getting involved in a recreational association allows for creation of lasting links of friendship. Johanne, sister-in-law of Kim, writes, “We announce our activities in the local newspapers so as to let the general public know about our activities. We also create a sense of belonging through a team T-shirt worn by all the young people. In the photo Johanne and Kim are holding the AVRDI sign.
Johanne Savard is the Executive Director of this association, called AVRDI. More information about it is available in Good Practices in Action in the Additional Resources section.
Programs include dances, movie nights, bowling, a choral group, outings to special events, a summer camp for youth, and a mid-day gathering on Fridays for those who are free during the day. Adapted transportation is available of some of their programs. Several AVRDI programs and events are free with the $20 annual family membership. Others require a modest fee.
